On this most romantic of days (so says the greeting card industry) I present to you one of the most romantic songs ever sung.
The selection for today is Chaudvin Ka Chand sung by Mohammed Rafi. See the song below in all it's romantic glory with Guru Dutt singing it to his new bride, Waheeda Rehman, on their wedding night. Considered one of the most romantic songs ever recorded, the lyrics are translated below as well.
Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho, Ya Aaftaab Ho
whether you are the moon of the 14th (a rare beauty), or sunshine
Jo Bhi Ho Tum Khuda Ki Kasam, Lajawab Ho
whatever you are, I swear to God, you are incomparable
Zulfein Hain Jaise Kaandhe Pe Baadal Jhuke Hue
your hair is like clouds spilling over your shoulders
Aankhen Hain Jaise Maey Ke Pyaale Bhare Hue
your eyes are like cups filled with wine
Masti Hai Jisme Pyaar Ki Tum, Woh Sharaab Ho
you are the alcohol which contains the intoxicant of love
Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho ...
Chehra Hai Jaise Jheel Mein Khilta Hua Kanwal
your face is like the lotus flower blooming in the lake
Ya Zindagi Ke Saaz Pe Chhedi *** Ghazal
or like the beautiful song written on the melodius instrument of life
Jaane Bahaar Tum Kisi Shaayar Ka Khwaab Ho
blossom of my life, you must be some dream of a poet
Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho ...
Hothon Pe Khelti Hain T*a*b*a*s*s*u*m Ki Bijliyaan
on your lips play a smile of electricity
Sajde Tumhari Raah Mein Karti Hain Kahkashaan
the celestial sphere bows in your path to salute you
Duniya-E-Husno-Ishq Ka Tum Hi Shabaab Ho
you are the end all in the world of beauty and love
Chaudvin Ka Chand Ho ...

Thanks for adding this lovely song and the translation. It's beautiful! Happy anniversary! Never been to Iceland, but my co-blogwala Nandini has. I am at one with the biting cold, being a resident of Minnesota, where we've had lots of wind chill temperatures in the -20 to -30s this winter. On the bright side, it's great weather for watching Bollywood movies.
All the best,
Sita-ji
Sita-ji - Glad you stopped by and thanks for the good wishes! Iceland is like being on the surface of the moon & the people are just amazing. We have cousins in Minnesota and the temperatures there never cease to amaze us! We are in New Orleans and currently enjoying 70 degrees & sunshine :)
Thanks for translating the song - this is actually the first time I've heard it - it is so romantic! I agree with you about Iceland - it's absolutely beautiful, spent a blissful few days there a couple of years ago and can't wait to go back. Wonderful people and awesome scenery. Love the photo.
So glad I was able to introduce you to the song! We went there for Icelandic Airwaves - a music festival that takes place in various clubs & bars throughout downtown, highly recommend it if you can get out there again...
Happy Anniversary (though belated)!!!
It is ironic that I have just seen this movie yesterday (OK I did see it a a child, but this time I saw it w/ real interest)- and loved it to bits :D
Thanks Shweta! I have recently rewatched several movies as an adult and it is like watching a new movie. Not sure why but old Indian movies just don't seem as 'dated' to me as old Hollywood movies do...
Yes Doc, MN is very cold, especially this year. So if the Mississippi were the Ganga, I'd be up near the Himilayas, and you'd be down near Kolkata. :) I've been to New Orleans just a few months before Katrina, and enjoyed your lovely city and the Gulf coast.
All the best,
Sita-ji
P.S. I've got Chaudhvin Ka Chand 1st in queue at netflix and am looking forward to seing it.

Sita-Ji - It is a nice city and reminds me alot of India. Lots of culture, great food, friendly people, heat & mosquitoes, corrupt politicians, living life to the fullest, random street flooding, random power outages. Everyday is an adventure here ;) Enjoy the movie and looking forward to a review from you in the very near future!
Dear Doc, what a gorgeous translation! Sita-ji included your link in a response to my message that I'd just watched "Chaudvin Ka Chand", and what a lovely film it was (I love Guru Dutt!). I always feel a tug at my heart watching his films, as knowing that he was plagued with depression just breaks my heart; he was so gifted, and I just wish that he would've had some help along the way with his ailment. Loved also your description of Iceland, and the picture was sweet as well. Been to India twice and have a third visit scheduled for December, but alas, I've only refueled in Iceland!
Jen - thanks for stopping by and the kind words as well. I agree with you about Guru Dutt, as a psychiatrist as well as a Bollywood fan his story was just heartbreaking. Iceland is wonderful but for my money I would take every vacation I could to India - there is just so much to see :)
oh man. guru dutt in iceland. hope ther will e some bollywood fans in artic too. well guru dutt is one of the best in india even today a lot of people draws inspiration from him. (from his movies)
He is loved worldwide and yes, his presence is felt in Bollywood even today.
